Information about Tutor Ann Zuccardy

Even as a child, I always knew that writing would be the foundation of whatever career I chose. In the early 1980s when I graduated from college with a bachelor's degree in English, there were no PCs and no internet as we know it today. I knew how to read, write, analyze, teach, and speak, but I didn't know a thing about the business world or the technology that was emerging at that time...and I thought I didn't care.

After a short stint teaching in inner city schools in New Orleans, I found myself working in New York City, interviewing and placing employees in temp jobs. In the corner of our little office, stood an IBM PC - one of those early behemoths with two floppy drives, no hard drive, and a monochrome monitor. Everyone in the office was terrified of it.

I've always loved language - any language - and I decided to learn the language of computers. So I fiddled and experimented, took a few programming classes and became the person in the office who explained this new technology to others. I documented everything I learned and developed instructional and troubleshooting manuals for other users. I didn't realize it at the time, but I had become a technical writer.

Later on, in the early 1990s, when I became a mother and wanted to stay at home with my toddler, I heard that people were creating businesses and selling products without even having a store! They were doing through this cool computer network called the internet. It was foreign to me, but I decided I wanted to be part of it, so I created a business called Vermont Shortbread Company and began to sell cookies online. I became a copywriter without even realizing it.

Back in those days, there was no Facebook, Twitter, or Google+. I knew I couldn't afford traditional print advertising for my business so I started blogging around 2003 to draw attention to my business and engage my customers in conversation. Thus began my introduction to social media, content marketing, and understanding the differences between writing for print and writing for the web.

I have worked in corporate communications at National Life Group, in Montpelier, VT and IBM as a technical writer. In my freelance life, I have done copywriting, food writing, blogging, and social media community management.

I own AZ Communications and I specialize in coaching my clients to find their voice and hone their message across many platforms. I am a member of the National Speakers Association, Toastmasters of Greater Burlington, and Women Speakers Association. In 2013 I did a TEDx talk and since then I've been finding my passion in public speaking and teaching. I'm an empty nester with a daughter in college, a dog, husband and a life that I love doing work I love. I'm honored to share it with you!
